Choice Personal Fitness™ was founded in 2007 as a state-of-the-art personal training enterprise. Choice™ creates individualized training programs for adults and youth targeting general fitness or sports specific gains. The basis of all movement begins in the core and all of the Choice™ programs focus on developing core strength and proprioception (balance) while increasing muscular strength and endurance. Choice has been chosen one of the top personal training companies in the North Carolina area for the last two years!
In January, 2009, Irby accepted the position of assistant strength and conditioning coach at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina - a Division One school in the MEAC Conference. Irby’s credo is: “Every day is a great day because it gives me an opportunity to learn more and help motivate more people toward a healthier lifestyle”.

What makes “The Choice Way™” program so successful?
Fitness is an individual goal. Fitness ideas differ from person to person. That is why all of our programs for our clients are unique. We begin with a foundation and based upon the client’s goals, we adjust the program to achieve individual success. Here is how we do it.
Client Questionnaire
Our client questionnaire provides basic information regarding our client’s lives, in particular occupation, eating habits, medical history and recreational activities. Anything that affects the physical and mental condition of the client is important to us. Developing an individualized program needs continuous input from the client.
Nutritional Analysis and Consultation
With Tyrone Irby’s background as executive chef for Up in Smoke Catering™, nutritional consultation is as essential as any other aspect of the overall program. Since 2003, UIS has been one of North Carolina’s leading caterers focusing on healthy, nutritious alternatives to traditional catered foods. Analyzing the eating habits of the client over a specific timeframe provides an opportunity to make changes and adjustments to the diet to ensure the overall success of their plan.
Postural Analysis
Targeting individual programming, our postural analysis is designed to identify any client muscular imbalances. Using the Overhead Squat Test, Star Excursion Balance Test and Single Leg Squat Assessment, we analyze how your body moves and detects any static or dynamic posture and movement deviations that affect your overall health. This is one of the most important aspects of our program because we make no assumptions - each client is viewed individually. Detecting muscular imbalances is the beginning of designing an effective program to achieve success for each client.
Balance and Core Strength Programming
Balance and core strengthening are an essential part of The Choice Way™ system. Without balance and core strength our bodies cannot perform to our maximum capabilities. Our balance program assesses each client’s proprioception with the importance of maintaining the body’s center of gravity. In general, the balance and core portion of the program uses only body weight or light resistance. This is essential because if you cannot move and control your own body weight then you cannot effectively and safely move additional resistance.
Progressive Resistance Training
Our core and resistance training programs progressively build lean muscle, burn body fat and increase the overall strength and fitness level of each client. We utilize bodyweight and free weights in proprioceptively enriched environments to improve balance while building muscular strength and endurance. Resistance programs progress every 3-4 weeks to keep your body guessing and the body fat burning. Our programming is based upon challenging each client-every session.
Flexibility
Increasing flexibility and range of motion (ROM) are key strategies to increase muscular strength and endurance in addition to preventing injury. We utilize a progressive stretching and flexibility program to enhance your core and resistance training and also assist with recover from sore muscles. Our primary stretching techniques are: static, AIS (active isolated stretch) and PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation).
Research shows, you lose 10% of your flexibility every 10 years if you do not engage in a stretching program.
